Naturalist Positions at FBES:
Ferry Beach Ecology School will begin accepting applications for the Spring 2011 season in November.
Follow this link for more details about the naturalist job position.
FBES Directors
Ferry Beach Ecology School was founded in the fall of 1998 by Brad Bradway, Drew Dumsch and Steve Signell (former FBES Director of Staff & Curriculum and author of the FBES Teaching Guide). Together our administrators have more than 45 years experience, and share a passion for teaching and creating effective, innovative environmental education programs.
Drew Dumsch,
Executive Director

(Saco, Maine) — MA (1993) University of Tennessee, Knoxville and BA (1990) Kalamazoo College (both degrees in English.)
Drew worked as a naturalist in California and Chicago and since 1991 has been an ecologist, naturalist and educator at Ferry Beach. He founded Ferry Beach Ecology School in 1998, is treasurer of the Maine Environmental Education Association (MEEA) and is the President of the New England Environmental Education Alliance (NEEEA). When not working to advance the cause of ecology education, Drew spends his time with his wife, Lisa, and two daughters, Nia and Sophie on the Nonesuch River behind their house..
Maureen Duggan,
Associate Director

(Portland, ME) — BA (1985) in Broadcasting, University of Maine at Orono. Maureen grew up in Bangor and truly believes that Maine is the way life should be. Maureen (Auntie Mo) continues to search for what she will be when she grows up. After a 20-year career in television as a producer, writer and director, Mo entered the non-profit world as a marketing specialist and development director. Mo is responsible for promoting FBES and raising money for our fantastic programs. Mo joined Ferry Beach Ecology School in September 2009 and can’t wait until people start recognizing her as a hippy, dippy tree hugger.
Alex Grindle,
Residential Program Director

(Portland, ME) — BA (2001) in Environmental Studies & Politics from Oberlin College. Alex began her career at Ferry Beach in the spring of 2002 as a naturalist and stepped into an administrative position in January of 2004. She spends her summers at a camp on Lake Winnipesaukee in New Hampshire. Alex is into politics and is an avid Red Sox and New England teams fan. Some of the things she finds herself doing in her free time include: trying to put her two cats (one of them toothless) on a diet, taking her dog on many a long walk, enjoying being outside in just about any capacity, reading (especially if it is young adult literature!), watching any number of medical dramas on TV or gardening and cooking scrumptious meals from with her husband, Peter.
Meg Edstrom,
Outreach Director

(Portland, ME) — MA (2004) in Elementary Education from the University of Maine. BA (2001) in Philosophy and Religion from Colgate University. After leading outdoor education programs throughout college, Meg shifted her focus to formal education and spent several years teaching 4th and 5th grades. Given her uncanny ability to thrive on nut butters and chocolate (although she has recently re-discovered a repressed love for cooking), Meg enjoys all manner of alfresco pursuits: climbing, paddling, snurfing, and snipe hunts are some favorites. Meg was a FBES naturalist in the spring of 2007 and joined the FBES admin team soon after that.
John Ibsen,
Assistant to the Directors &
Food For Thought Coordinator

(Saco, ME) – BS (2007) in Environmental Studies from the University of Vermont. John, or “Johno” as he is known at Ferry Beach, started working as a naturalist in 2007 and began his administrative role in 2008. He enjoys geeking out about trees, carving spoons, building things, cooking and hiking. He is excited for the fall garden harvest and some great fall fishing in the Saco Bay.
Krysta Zambroski,
Program Naturalist

(Saco, ME) –BS (2007) in Environmental Studies with a focus in experiential education at the University of Vermont. Krysta grew up in New Hampshire, but has found herself in Maine most recently. She began her career as a naturalist in 2008, but her love for the outdoors sprouted much earlier. Attending Ferry Beach Ecology School as a student in 1999 was a major influence, as well as driving across the country with her parents, two siblings and three cats. Krysta likes to soak up the sun while skiing or hiking and when she retreats indoors you can find her cooking, baking, or sewing sock monkeys. Krysta joined team admin this winter and looks forward to the fall term!
