RAVE REVIEWS FOR ABCs OF ECOLOGY: An Educator's Guide to Learning Outside:
Our 230-page teaching curriculum got a terrific review in the winter 2007 Green Teacher magazine. The Review reads: "The ABCs of Ecology is a guide prepared by staff of the Ferry Beach Ecology School in Maine to help educators incorporate field ecology into their science curriculum. “ABC” stands for Abiotic, Biotic, Cycles and Change, which the authors use as the four organizing principles for teaching ecology. The first chapter explores these basic principles, while the other four delve into geology (rocks and soil formation), climate (wind, clouds, atmosphere), forest ecology (diversity, habitat, nutrient cycles, succession) and watersheds (wetlands, water quality). Each chapter provides definitions, background information and a variety of activities for both indoors and out. While a few activities involve study plots or research, most are quick 10- to - 20 minute exercises, games or demonstrations that teach a specific concept... Although aimed at Grades 4-6, these experiential activities would add a fun component to any field ecology program, and would be especially helpful to educators who are just beginning to use the outdoors as a science classroom...
